With a total number of 24’479 registered participants, 21’557 starters and 21’449 finishers the Zuercher Silvesterlauf posted a new record for it’s 40th anniversary. While the large starting fields of the enthusiast runners’ categories of all ages took to the proven loops in Zurich’s historic district, the organizers came up with a new and innovative format for the elite races. These were held on a short, spectator-friendly loop so the runners were passing the crowds many times. For additional viewing pleasure, the last runners got eliminated at intermediary sprints every two laps. Switzerland’s Tadesse Abraham and Kenya’s Betty Chepkwony as the day’s winners took no chances, controlling their respective races from the front before placing the decisive acceleration to get rid of their last rivals.
At 11:10 the starting pistol has been fired. 24'229 runners have registered for this year's anniversary edition of the 40th Zürcher Silvesterlauf. Have fun everyone!
